Karin Smyth, MP for Bristol South

“I’m pleased that the government has finally seen sense and has u-turned on its free school meals policy over the summer.
Thanks to pressure from the Labour Party, Marcus Rashford, and others, children in England will now receive meal vouchers over the 6 week summer holiday if they are eligible for free school meals.
This is a victory for common sense and decency and will help to ensure that no child goes hungry at this time of national crisis.
I’d like to thank all of the charities and community groups who are helping to ensure individuals and families across Bristol have the food they need at this difficult time. Feeding Bristol and FareShare South West are just two examples of the brilliant work going on — their support is a lifeline for many and I have no doubt that this work will continue in the future”.
